Economic Growth and Agricultural Development
In 2024, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) achieved a milestone in beef production, reaching a record 1.068 million tons. This represents a significant increase of 12.37% compared to the 951.3 thousand tons produced in 2023. The increase is linked to a 12% growth in cattle slaughter, totaling 3.9 million heads.
The State Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Semadesc) reported that this impressive performance is the result of the increasing adoption of technology in the agricultural sector. This has led to a reduction in slaughter age and better utilization of cattle. Rogério Beretta, Executive Secretary of Sustainable Economic Development at Semadesc, highlighted that the result directly reflects investments in greater production efficiency.
Of the total cattle slaughtered in the state in 2024, 1.534 million were classified as "early steers", with 1.211 million receiving R$ 117.5 million in incentives through the government program Precoce MS. The number of animals included in this program grew to 31.6% of the total slaughtered in the state. This state initiative was revised in December 2023 to evaluate not only the animals but also the properties, promoting best agricultural practices and sustainable production.
The agricultural sector of Mato Grosso do Sul generated US$ 9.5 billion in exports in 2024. Beef exports accounted for US$ 1.71 billion of this total, marking a 24% increase compared to the previous year. China remained the main destination for the state's beef, importing 24.18% of the total, followed by the United States (18.42%) and Chile (14.58%). In total, Mato Grosso do Sul exported 257 thousand tons of fresh beef, a substantial increase of 33.6% compared to the 192.7 thousand tons shipped in 2023. Revenue also increased by 8.6%, reaching US$ 1.223 billion.
The positive outlook for beef production in the state highlights the importance of efficient cattle management. Experts indicate that technical monitoring during slaughter can prevent losses of up to R$ 500 per animal, ensuring better carcass yield and maximizing profits. In addition, ranchers belonging to the Mato Grosso do Sul Association of Early Steer Producers (Novilho Precoce MS) have an exclusive scale to ensure greater transparency in the weight of the animals sold, increasing control over the profitability of production.
With a thriving market and continuous investments in technology and quality, Mato Grosso do Sul is consolidating its position as an important hub of Brazilian livestock, ensuring competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets.
